"What Idaho growers are learning about growing teff"

Teff (Eragrostis tef) is our "millet-of-the-month" again in November. As we know, it is a relatively recent crop introduction in North America, which has caught on as a niche grain crop and a widely used forage/hay crop. Here's an article that explores the experience of teff farmers in Idaho - which is sometimes called the second largest producer of teff after the country of Ethiopia (which is by far the biggest): "What Idaho growers are learning about growing teff," by Lynn James, Ag Proud - Idaho, 14 May 2025 https://www.agproud.com/articles/61436-what-idaho-growers-are-learning-abou… The article features extensive comments by Berny Marquez, who contracts with The Teff Company (which markets Maskal Teff), and Joey Wallace, a farm manager for Driscoll Brothers. It also mentions Wayne Carlson, president of The Teff Company, and his role in introducing teff to Idaho in the 1970s. I just caught up with a podcast interview of Claire Smith, the founder of Teffola, which markets granola and snacks made with teff from Michigan. The podcast series she was on - Heartland Hot Dish - is also based in the same state. "Teff: The Other Regional Grain, with Claire Smith of Teffola," Heartland Hot Dish, 15 September 2025 https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/heartland-hot-dish/id1796887588?i=100… (1:07:43). Their blurb: "In this episode of Heartland Hot Dish, we sit down with Claire Smith, founder & CEO of Teffola, to peel back the layers on teff — a tiny ancient grain that’s steadily making its way into kitchens far beyond Ethiopia. Claire shares the story of how her family farm in southern Michigan transformed its identity, growing teff among other grains, and building a transparent supply chain from field to breakfast bowl." My take: This podcast has a lot of interesting information from Claire, especially about the business side of what she's doing, along with some insights about growing grain teff. However there is also a lot of banter with hosts Kieron Hales, Daniel Burman, and Max (?). Still, definitely worth the listen. The episode title should not be taken literally - as far as I know, the Smiths' Tenera farms in Michigan is the only commercial producer of grain teff in the state, and one of only a very few in the Midwest. One thing not mentioned in the podcast is that their operation is different from most other grain teff producers in the US, who grow the grain under contract with Maskal or Selam (if my information is still current on the latter). New Proso Millet Grading Standards FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: NAMA— By Gary W. Wietgrefe—November 13, 2025 New proso millet grades and trading standards released by the North American Millets Alliance (NAMA) are now available for farmers, elevators, shippers, processors, and exporters. Around seven hundred million pounds of proso millet are produced in the U.S. each year with no uniform grain trading standards. Many millets are available in the U.S., but proso has the largest quantity of millet grain. United States proso grading standards have not been updated since threshing machines were used in the early 1950s (Minnesota) and combines of the early 1960s (Colorado), with various buyers today using a hodgepodge of trading standards depending on geography and eventual use. Farmers have not segregated good proso from low quality proso because there have been no uniform standards or premiums for quality. New trading standards will allow buyers and processors to pay premiums for high quality proso, and consumers to be assured of high quality end products. Proso is finding new uses in consumer and culinary foods, snacks, beverages, essential oils, biofuels, mushroom production, and other unique markets since 2023 when the United Nations launched the International Year of Millets. How could food-grade, or beverage buyers expect to get truckloads or rail cars of quality proso grain using six-decade old trading grades originally developed for the bird food industry? Edible cups made with kodo millet

Kodo millet - our "millet of the month" in October - has been used as the core material to make edible cups as a replacement for single-use disposable cups. If the idea of edible cups and bowls seems strange, by the way, think of it as an expansion of the idea behind ice cream cones. There are actually edible coffee cups on the market in some countries (see https://ediblecup.coffee/en/ ), but now millets are entering this sector. Journal of Food Measurement and Characterization 18, 6485–6493 (2024). https://doi.org/10.1007/s11694-024-02664-x I've also seen mention of sorghum and finger millet used for this purpose. The field of edible "eatingware" or "tableware" (cups, bowls & utensils) is receiving more attention as a response to the volume of disposable single-use eatingware that is often made of plastic or paper with plastic coating. Various companies market such edible products in the US and Canada, altho not to our knowledge using millets. Edible eatingware that is disposed of rather than consumed is of course fully biodegradable.
