Finger millet (Eleusine coracana) is our "millet of the month" for May in 2024. Here are links to a short video and a number of other items that may be of interest. Finger millet is not yet grown in North America outside of a few experimental fields and some ornamental planting (as far as I know), but it is seen as having potential. It is noted for being extremely high in calcium content. Finger millet grain, flour, and some processed products are imported from India, and sold in stores specializing in foods from South Asia, as well as online. The video mentioned above is of a brief presentation about finger millet by Prof.. Patrick Byrne of Colorado State University. The presentation was apparently done at the CSU Agricultural Research, Development and Education Center in November 2023, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aMsESDpQ6GI . Thank you, Dipak. The information and updates you provide are most appreciated. Gary, I'd also like to thank you again for sharing your expertise and long experience with millets. Hopefully in these exchanges we have answered Sruthi's questions (if not, please let us know!). We look forward to reading about this study! There are two takeaways I get from this conversation - the needs for (1) clearer information on millets, or perhaps a better presentation of what we know, and (2) more research, both formal and informal. Neither of these is a revelation, and as broad as these are, they don't represent the totality of needs in the millets space currently (another need, for example is for processing capacity for millets, but that's a different discussion). Regarding #1, we've discussed an information clearing house approach, which might still be a medium-term goal. In the short term, it might be useful to split the current NAMA FAQ ("frequently asked questions"), which is currently 4 pagesinto one on NAMA itself, and the other on millets in general with focus on North American facts & figures (such as we have them). Another idea on this first point that I've been thinking about is a book on millets in North America. That might be single-author, joint author, or an edited volume of articles. The intended audience would be general, with maybe an ag extension flavor? So any interested reader could access, farmers and producers could find value, and it could be used in undergraduate courses. I know that Gary has published his own volumes on millets, and that our academic colleagues have their production of articles and books, but this would be more popular press (or academic press with an outreach angle?). I personally am interested in working on such a project, altho my time is still seriously constrained. Regarding #2, we are looking at a strategy of supporting small scale research to complement that done with larger grants That also is a longer discussion. Much to do! Sruthi, we welcome your research as it will add food details to the complex U.S. millet matrix. Little is publicly available on quantities and types of various U.S. millets used for food (most of which is proso). Lacking accurate data, I made estimates in a couple presentations last year for the International Millet Conference in Gehring, NE (Aug. 2), and non-food uses of U.S. millets (Nov. 15) which was a NAMA webinar. Hello, I hope you're doing well! I'm a graduate student in Nutritional Sciences at California State University, Chico. I'm currently working on my research project " Sensory Evaluation and Acceptance of millets in California State University, Chico". In this project, I collaborated with the university dining hall and conducted a taste test of millets involving students and staff of CSU, Chico to assess their acceptance of millets as a whole grain. I'm currently working on writing my paper. However, I was stuck when I was looking into percentage or number of acres used cultivating of millets for cattle or bird feed and human consumption. I was wondering if anyone can help me in this regard. It would be of great help to complete the paper and research. A quick search online gave me three impressions: (1) lignans are not the same as lignins; (2) defining lignans quickly gets into organic chemistry; and (3) lignans in the human diet (they come from plants) are often referred to in positive terms, In fact, I had a hard time finding negative takes on lignans, and those related to very high consumption of flax (one of the foods particularly high in these compounds; all grain, including millets and sorghum, have lignans, but at more moderate levels). We've been discussing pearl millet incidentally this month, which is kind of an ideal way to take advantage of a "millet of the month." Nevertheless, I thought I'd post specifically about it before the month is through. Appended below is the text of what was posted to the NAMA page on LinkedIn, with minor edits: Pearl millet is again our April millet-of-the-month. A crop from the semi-arid tropics, it is grown for food in much of Africa and southern Asia - the West African Sahel and India are major producing regions. In terms of volume, it is the most produced of all the grains surnamed "millet." In North America pearl millet is mostly grown for forage and as a cover crop, with some production of grain for feed. There is, however, a growing interest in its potential here as a food crop. I have been searching for a source of grain type Pearl Millet seed for planting in Oklahoma this Spring. There are plenty of forage hybrids available, but I’ve had no luck finding a shorter statured grain variety. 10 to 50 pounds is sufficient. Any referrals or contacts are greatly appreciated. As an agronomist, my concern is pearl millet will not mature as it is brought north. I grew small plot samples of pearl millet (Millex 32) in Sioux Falls, SD and it did not mature. I did track sugar levels trends in leaf and stalk which indicates what sugars are available for starch conversion. At 58 days after planting: no sucrose, no fructose, no glucose, and no maltose detected. At 102 days after planting: 2.28% sucrose, 3.11% fructose, 1.63% glucose, and no maltose. At 132 days after planting: 0.362% sucrose, 5.64% fructose, 4.96% glucose, and no maltose. My experience comparing a corn, forage soybean, pearl millet, with seven forage sorghum and sudangrass crosses indicated sucrose will peak at some point as fructose and glucose levels rise as the plant readies itself for starch conversion as seed. Thousands of acres of pearl millet are planted annually in South Dakota, but always as multi-cut forage (assuming late rains) or grazing. Never for seed. I believe pearl millet is similar to grain sorghum in that grain varieties available will reach a north latitude at which seed will not fully mature (Kansas? Oklahoma?). In central South Dakota, the most northern grain sorghum (milo) production for the shortest season grain hybrids are confirmed by my 40 years of experience. Most years, Sorghum Partners 251 grain sorghum (an original Funks variety likely developed in the early 1960s) fully matured at 44 degrees N., but seldom if ever matured at 45 degrees N. Likewise, pearl millet will have a maximum north latitude range. As pearl moves west from Mississippi drainage to Central Plains, increased solar radiation will allow maturities to move north by perhaps 200 miles. On the other hand, I have found no northern limit to proso which is not hybridized but matures based on night-length. That is why in central Alberta proso can be planted around June 1, and harvested the end of September because their total hours of day far exceeds night during the growing season. It is the same reason U. of Nebraska developed proso varieties were the highest yielding varieties in my joint testing with Mongolian State University of Agriculture in tests against varieties coming out of western Russia (Siberia).
