Chef Pierre Thiam on the Future Fork podcast (26 Aug. 2024)

As we close out August, in which fonio is the millet of the month (along with related Digitarias), I'd like to share info on a recent podcast featuring Chef Pierre Thiam, who has certainly done more than any other individual to introduce fonio to the world. The podcast in Paul Newnham's Future Fork series, is entitled "The importance of agricultural diversity" (26 August 2024. 34:56). His restaurants allow him to showcase West African cuisine with a focus on sustainability. Pierre has also written four cookbooks so people can enjoy African cuisine at home. An insider's view of Yolélé's fonio business

Two podcast interviews earlier this year with Philip Teverow, the co-founder with Chef Pierre Thiam of the Yolélé brand line of fonio products, offer insights into their company's vision and operations. Both are good conversations, and altho some information is repeated in different ways, there are other differences. Two items on fonio

Fonio is our "millet of the month" in July. Podcasts: Regenerative by Design & Heritage Radio Network

From time to time I post about podcast episodes that mention one or more of the millets. This time I'll spotlight a couple of podcasts that each have more than one episode treating or touching upon this subject. First, Joni Kindwall-Moore (Snacktivist Foods and NAMA) has a new podcast called "Regenerative by Design: Getting to the root of health, climate, economics & food" https://snacktivistfoods.com/pages/regenerative-by-design-podcast Among the episodes currently listed is an interview with Chef Pierre Thiam (Yolélé and Teranga), who has developed a line of products made with fonio, and a supply chain going back to smallholder farmers - many of them women - in West Africa: "Regenerating the Sahel and Rediscovering Forgotten Foods with Chef Pierre Thiam" (5 May 2022) https://snacktivistfoods.com/pages/regenerating-the-sahal-and-rediscovering… I understand that an upcoming episode features John Manuel, Chief Commercial Officer of Dryland Genetics, an organization researching and promoting cultivation of proso millet in the US. It bills itself as "the world's pioneer food radio station" and has been going for over a decade. June webinar, advance notice

The next Millets Webinar, on Wed. 21 June, has as its theme, "Tasty grains: What millets bring to the table." Whereas the May webinar focused on processing of millets "from harvest to food," the upcoming one highlights culinary aspects, "from kitchen to table."
