2 short videos on artisanal harvest & processing of foxtail millet
Came across one short video on small-scale growing and home processing (threshing & milling) of foxtail millet, and adjacent to that, a much shorter one on traditional harvesting of the same grain. It does not appear that there is any dehulling? Don, I appreciate that you noticed the lack of de-hulling information. At least one of our foxtail millet millet accessions is easier to de-hull in my hand than other accessions. PI 433414, Setaria italica (L.) P. Beauv., Coulevungnath https://npgsweb.ars-grin.gov/gringlobal/descriptoraccession?id1=225001&id2=t... There is a small gap in the apical end of the floret so under a microscope you can look in and see the seed grain. Other accessions have what I think are typical hard to de-hull florets. Given earlier discussions about the difficulty in (de)hulling some of the small millets, this consideration concerning foxtail millet leads me to wonder about characterization of the physical qualities of the hulls of diverse small millets and varieties thereof. Further afield, it is well known that adlay (Job's tears; Coix lacrymae-jobi) has one variety with soft shells, which is that cultivated for food uses, and one with hard shells, sometimes called "wild," which is sometimes used as an ornamental or for crafts (as beads).
