Pearl millet as April millet-of-the-month

We've been discussing pearl millet incidentally this month, which is kind of an ideal way to take advantage of a "millet of the month." Nevertheless, I thought I'd post specifically about it before the month is through. Appended below is the text of what was posted to the NAMA page on LinkedIn, with minor edits: Pearl millet is again our April millet-of-the-month. A crop from the semi-arid tropics, it is grown for food in much of Africa and southern Asia - the West African Sahel and India are major producing regions. In terms of volume, it is the most produced of all the grains surnamed "millet." In North America pearl millet is mostly grown for forage and as a cover crop, with some production of grain for feed. There is, however, a growing interest in its potential here as a food crop. The two images attached come from webpages with more information: * "Drought Tolerant Pearl Millet," Dryland Seed (includes good bullet point descriptions of the plant and agronomy, but note that there are varieties that grow much taller than what is stated) https://drylandseed.com/pearl-millet/ * "How To Eat Pearl Millet," Recipes.net (includes good short descriptions of how pearl millet is prepared & eaten) https://recipes.net/articles/how-to-eat-pearl-millet/ Don Osborn, PhD (East Lansing, MI, US) North American Millets Alliance
