And then back in the US discover "millet" in the grocery bulk section that wasn't at all the same thing? Well, it gets even more complicated. There are about a dozen cultivated species of what we call "millet." each with its own growth characteristics, taste, and nutritional profile. They're essential for many smallholder farmers, and of broader interest in a time of climate change and high dependence on a few major crops. So the UNGA has declared 2023 the "International Year of Millets" A small group of volunteers (lower case "v," but including RPCVs) is gearing up to plan for how to take advantage of the Year to raise the profile of millets as foods & crops, in the US and North America as a whole.
