Thanks, Joni, for the question, and Dipak for the response. Since some small percentage of proso hulls are marketed for pillow fill, I wondered if one might also approach your question from that end. In other words, asking how proso mill waste is processed to yield hulls of sufficient quality and cleanliness to use in pillows. Thought it might shed an interesting light on the post milling process.. However, I don't see any overviews that would give a clearer picture of how producers of millet hull pillow fill process whatever they get from the mills. For what it's worth, here are examples of how cleaning is mentioned on sites selling millet hulls: * "triple screened and washed": https://beanproducts.com/products/organic-millet-hulls * "triple-cleaned and 99.9% dust-free" https://buckywholesale.com/products/1-lb-millet-hulls-yellow * "fully dusted" (with lavender), or "bulk not fully dusted" https://openyoureyesbedding.com/products/millet-hulls In an entirely different context, we learned that the process of dehulling proso does crack some percentage of grains, so putting this together, one imagines that mill waste includes hulls, fragments of grains, and dust in some proportions. But that also doesn't tell us much. I did come across one mention of fumigation for buckwheat hulls - another pillow fill that is often compared to millet hulls - which may or may not be a general part of processing hulls for use in bedding. So maybe the mill waste may include or quickly attract certain kinds of insects. Anyway, please let us know what you find out, Joni.
