Podcasts: Regenerative by Design & Heritage Radio Network

From time to time I post about podcast episodes that mention one or more of the millets. This time I'll spotlight a couple of podcasts that each have more than one episode treating or touching upon this subject. First, Joni Kindwall-Moore (Snacktivist Foods and NAMA) has a new podcast called "Regenerative by Design: Getting to the root of health, climate, economics & food" https://snacktivistfoods.com/pages/regenerative-by-design-podcast Among the episodes currently listed is an interview with Chef Pierre Thiam (Yolélé and Teranga), who has developed a line of products made with fonio, and a supply chain going back to smallholder farmers - many of them women - in West Africa: "Regenerating the Sahel and Rediscovering Forgotten Foods with Chef Pierre Thiam" (5 May 2022) https://snacktivistfoods.com/pages/regenerating-the-sahal-and-rediscovering-... I understand that an upcoming episode features John Manuel, Chief Commercial Officer of Dryland Genetics, an organization researching and promoting cultivation of proso millet in the US. Second is a major food podcast that I'm only just discovering - Heritage Radio Network at https://heritageradionetwork.org/ . It bills itself as "the world's pioneer food radio station" and has been going for over a decade. According to Wikipedia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heritage_Radio_Network , it has produced over 4000 shows - apparently organized by series each with their own numbering sequences.. A very impressive list Don! Thank you for sharing. The challenge seems to be, not the dearth of information, but the ease to access. Thanks, Joanna. I think the ease of access also has to be seen in the context of low percentages within massive data, and the levels of refinement needed to get to what is really relevant to the research..None of that would be a revelation, of course, but I'm thinking about it in relation to 2 of the HRN episodes in my list that I had the chance to listen to. The first was the 28 Sept 2021 interview with Abena Offeh-Gyimah. She offers some great descriptions of and context for ag and food in northeastern Ghana, including pearl millet and fonio (both black and white). Recommended, esp. the last 2/3 of the hour. The second was the recording of a panel interview "In Praise of Ancient Grains" at Slow Food Nations 2017. Despite the program notes, I didn't hear "millet" at all, and but "teff" and "sorghum" were only mentioned in passing late in the session. On the other hand, there were very interesting discussions of "lost" and found varieties of other crops in the US: gourd-seed corn and African rice (starting at 18:34) and purple-straw wheat (starting at about 1:09:30). Those stories had me recalling one from northern Mali that I've referred to before, about FAO organized seed fairs where farmers were rediscovering pearl millet varieties they thought had gone extinct, but were still grown elsewhere in their region. (This sort of thing really ought to be a big part of national/local efforts in the International Year of Millets, if no one has suggested it yet.) All the best, Don ------- Original Message ------- On Wednesday, June 8th, 2022 at 1:04 AM, Joanna Kane-Potaka <joanna.kanepotaka@outlook.com> wrote:
