Thank you, Babak, This additional information is helpful. A key question will be about the intended use of these varieties. For example whether any are grown for grain, or if they are primarily for forage.

All the best,

Don

Dear Don,

Thanks for your email and clarification.
Yes, you are right. I meant Agriculture Environmental Renewal Canada (AERC):

Dr. Dangi and his team have been working on different kinds of sorghum and millets for north America and have successfully produced a wide range of hybrids for different agro-climatic conditions. Interestingly, they have hybrid foxtail millet too.
Their varieties and hybrids are well adapted to cold weather in North America and short growing season. Hence, I assume that they will perform very well in Missouri too.
I am working with them to evaluate their superior materials in Iran too. Just had some problems with the quarantine office for the "risk assessments"...!!!
Hopefully, we can get the IPs by the next week after very long Holiday season...!

Best regards
Babak

Thank you, Babak, for this pointer. Very interested to learn of the work of Dr, Om Dangi on pearl millet in Canada. Looking online, I see he has also worked on sorghum.

The URL you supplied did something unusual - not your fault - but it led to the website of a US -based organization that states that it was AERC but is now Clean Earth Inc. at a different URL. The AERC you're referring to is Agriculture Environmental Renewal Canada (AERC) at https://www.aerc.ca - the only difference I see being the https rather than http in the URL. Please note https://www.aerc.ca as the good URL.

In any event, someone reached out to me mentioning you (thanks for the referral) and I'll follow up with them and with Dr. Dangi, and will share what I find out with the list.

All the best,

Thank you, Dipak, for the pointer. Thanks also to Esther and Abhinav for their interest in a possible meeting on pearl millet.

Dipak, I did actually reach out to Dr. Perumal last November, and will do so again. (Writing from a custom domain name sometimes means email goes to spam.)

All, I think we'll have to work behind the scenes, as it were, to see how best to organize a Zoom on grain pearl millet.

Btw, pearl millet is our "millet of the month" in April.

Best to everyone,

Dr. Ramaswamy Perumal at K-State University, Hays, KS is working to develop pearl millet grain type varieties for human consumption. To the best of my knowledge, this is the only public breeding program doing this.

Thank you, Steve, for the question, and Joni, for the follow up.

Since there are several people on this list with an interest of one sort or another in pearl millet as a grain crop in the US for human consumption, as well as others who are not here, I've been thinking about ways to facilitate communication among people in this group.

A first question, however, is whether there is any existing  group of people of any specialization in North America, concerned with growing grain pearl millet for human food?

If not, would there be interest in an online meeting on grain pearl millet in North America, to include interested researchers, farmers, processors, and culinary experts?

I'm bcc'ing Melanie Harrison of the USDA station in Griffin, Georgia, which deals with pearl millet (among some of the other millets) for her info and possible input regarding (1) seed, and (2) a possible interest group.

I have been searching for a source of grain type Pearl Millet seed for planting in Oklahoma this Spring. There are plenty of forage hybrids available, but I’ve had no luck finding a shorter statured grain variety. 10 to 50 pounds is sufficient.
Any referrals or contacts are greatly appreciated.
