In a recent posting about browntop millet, I noted a mention of that millet's apparent shade tolerance.* This trait is not something I've seen discussed for any grain before - and my assumption was that one always grew grains in full sunlight. Well, I have since come across this study of shade tolerance in foxtail millet, where it is grown in an agroforestry system with Chinese chestnut: Liu Dan, Cui Yanjiao, Zhao Zilong, Zhang Jing, Li Suying and Liu Zhengli. 2022.
