Speakers: * Dr. Om Dangi, president & CEO of Agriculture Environmental Renewal Canada, Inc. (AERC) will join us for perspectives on pearl millet in Canada, and the work of AERC in developing varieties of this crop * NAMA's Gary Wietgrefe, author and retired agronomist, will share info on pearl millet in the US, including his analysis suggesting a higher area planted in millets, including pearl millet, than official statistics show. Pearl millet is the sixth most cultivated grain crop in the world, but unlike in areas of Africa and Asia where it is a staple food, it is mostly grown in North America as a cover crop, for forage, and in some cases in rotation with other crops for pest control. In the US, it is more common in the southeast, but is well suited for hotter and drier regions to the west. Varieties have been developed for northerly latitudes, extending the productive range of this important crop into Canada.
