Wouldn't characterize it as "pedantic," but the nuance isn't apparent without explanation and perhaps repetition (the type of lacuna apparent in some of my personal writing). Noting that a recent tweet about the opening ceremony from the official FAO account also used the word "launch" - so the message may not be clear enough within FAO itself? See

That tweet also referred to millets as "this crop," which is another off-note in the messaging out of the gate. More consistent to say "these crops." But it's early in the game (pre-game?) and there is time to make adjustments and get the act together.
For any on the list who wonder what the role of India is that the official launch would be there - it was that country which initiated the proposal process for the International Year of Millets.
