Wouldn't characterize it as "pedantic," but the nuance isn't apparent without explanation and perhaps repetition (the type of lacuna apparent in some of my personal writing). Noting that a recent tweet about the opening ceremony from the official FAO account also used the word "launch" - so the message may not be clear enough within FAO itself? More consistent to say "these crops."
